Gratitude - Day 212 - July 31, 2014

I'm enjoying a wonderfully peaceful morning here on my back porch.  The weather is cool, the neighborhood is quiet, and the birds are very active.

Visiting Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens

Last weekend, my husband and I took a weekend trip to Charlotte, NC, a drive about 3 hours away from us in Raleigh.  While we were there, we visited the beautiful Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens.   I was absolutely entranced with these gardens - in fact, I believe this is now my favorite botanical gardens that I've ever visited.

Gratitude - Day 211 - July 30, 2014

We spent the day at the hospital today, after my husband experienced chest pains yesterday and then a trip to the emergency room via ambulance.   Today the task was to get a treadmill stress echocardiogram test.   What we hoped would be a routine and easy test in the morning turned into an all-day wait, with the test occurring only at 3pm, after a long day of waiting.

Gratitude - Day 210 - July 29, 2014

When the EMT asked me for my husband's social security number, I knew it by heart and was able to provide it.  I had a flash back to the day we met - over 31 years ago, on a 20 hour bus ride from Oklahoma to Wisconsin for a summer band camp.

The Monday Morning Garden

After a weekend away, you never know what you'll find in the garden.   Was there a rainstorm that knocked over all your phlox?   Did the deer find their favorite salad bar in your vegetable plot?   Did drought strike in the three short days since Friday?

When I returned home this morning, I found things had changed since Friday...

Gratitude - Day 209 - July 28, 2014

After a weekend away, you never know what you'll find in your garden.   Today I was surprised to find that my experimental bush beans are sprouting nicely, and have gotten a couple of sets of true leaves on them.

Gratitude - Day 206-208 - July 25-27, 2014

A weekend away. Glorious relaxing time spent together.  Wandering around North Carolina's beautiful countryside.  Taking in lovely gardens.   Catching a good movie.  Exploring the beautiful city of Charlotte.  Enjoying a great spectacle of the performing arts at a Drum Corps show.

Gratitude - Day 205 - July 24, 2014

This day was one for cleaning and laundry and other housework in preparation for a weekend away.  And full of things to be grateful for, like clothes, our home, and time spent together making our life.

Gratitude - Day 204 - July 23, 2014

Working today on getting all my new day lilies into the ground, getting the gardens watered and deadheaded, and getting mulch spread (again!).

Gratitude - Day 203 - July 22, 2014

Took the day off of "work" of any kind, and spent the entire day pampering, shopping, relaxing, eating out with my husband, and singing.   Not too shabby!  A lot of that time was spent reflecting on things the way they are now, the way they used to be for me, and the way they could be if I want.

Gratitude - Day 202 - July 21, 2014

This morning I took a trip down the road about 5 miles to Lakeview Daylily Farm.

Gratitude - Day 200-201 - July 19-20, 2014

This weekend was a quartet rehearsal weekend - meaning my girls came down to Raleigh on Friday night through Sunday midday, and we sang, sang and sang some more!

Gratitude - Days 196-198 - July 15-17, 2014

Once again, I've lost track of time and have missed a few days of Gratitude Project postings.  But I'm so happy to know that in fact, my "gratitude practice" is stronger than it's ever been.   So lack of posting doesn't mean lack of expressed gratitude!

I'm coming up on the 200th day of this project.  Maybe a time for reflection on how it's going?

How To Save Seeds

I'd like to share today some tips on how to save and store seeds from flowering plants.

Gratitude - Day 195 - June 14, 2014

I was going to write that today was a mixed bag of good and not-so-good things, yet, as I think about, I realize there are way more good things than the other kind.

Gratitude - Day 194 - July 13, 2014

A walk in the woods is good for the soul.

Gratitude - Day 193 - July 12, 2014

Saturdays... lazy, relaxing, low-pressure.

The best thing about Saturdays now is that it's a "whatever we want" kind of day.

Back when the kids were at home, or maybe back when I was still working, (or both?), Saturdays were always run here and there, do the laundry, groceries, clean the house, etc.   All the stuff that we didn't have time to do during the week.

But now, if I'm not singing somewhere, then Saturdays are a break.  They're time to chill out, to spend time with each other, to enjoy the house and yard, or go explore somewhere new.

Very grateful for these weekends with nothing to do.

Some Favorite Views in the Garden

On an overcast day, with rain hanging like a thick blanket on the air, I took the camera around the yard and gardens and found lots of loveliness.

Gratitude - Day 192 - July 11, 2014

I'm not sure what I'm most thankful for today, so I'll just make a long list.

Gratitude - Day 191 - July 10, 2014

Isn't this just about the most beautiful sight in the garden?

Gratitude - Day 190 - July 9, 2014

Bounty from the garden... goodness grows and I find it miraculous!

Yard And Garden - Then and Now

I was out in the garden taking pictures this morning, and it struck me how different things look compared to last year when we moved in to this home in Raleigh.  Then, the grass was well cared for, but the mulched flowerbeds were mostly empty.  We've been putting plants in and putting our mark on the yard for almost a year now, and things are looking much more like ours.   Here are some fun "then and now" photo comparisons in a few key areas in the yard.

Early July Yard and Gardens

Today I spent a long time out in the gardens, watering everything nice and deep, and generally inspecting things to see how thing are going.   I was happy to find the flowers and vegetables mostly in top shape, thanks to my neighbors and my husband, who together did the watering duties while I was gone.

Gratitude - Day 189 - July 8, 2014

What a wonderful "down day" I've had today, after returning from Germany yesterday!
