Took my daughter shopping today for things for her first apartment.
We've often talked about this as she was growing up - how fun it would be to go to Target or Walmart or the Dollar store or whatever, and pick out kitchen utensils and bathroom toothbrush holders and area rugs and throw pillows. We've looked forward to it for a long time.
Today was the day. And it was great! Not in a fireworks, breathtaking, spectacular kind of way, but in an awesome mom-and-daughter shopping trip kind of way. The joking around about the need (or lack of need) for the variety of kitchen gadgets that are out there. The discussion over whether or not a tea ball is a good idea. The choosing between this spatula or that one. Cups or glasses? Spring Meadow or Ocean Breeze scented laundry detergent?
We didn't finish - we still have to find out what the roommates are bringing and we have to see how much room there actually is in her bedroom and in the kitchen. But we had a great time. I learned a little more about my awesome kid who's not much of a kid anymore until it comes to picking out cute chip clips. I learned what her design sense is, what her outlook on health and food is, her sense of responsibility toward the earth and toward community. And her aversion to kitchen tongs.
It was an awesome day. :-)
